Who Decides Which Ideas are Good?
Radio needs to keep its eye and ears wide open
I often wonder about all the good ideas in the world that never made it off the drawing board. For one reason or other these good ideas never made it. Why? Was it because someone wasn’t paying attention? How many good ideas have been missed? They say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How many beholders missed the beauty? Hum.
Good ideas find there way in difficult times
It is a fact that difficult times spur new ideas and innovation. We know from history that many of today’s successful companies were created during some of the worst economics times. In this case, the good idea made it off the drawing board. All this leads me to consider what is happening to all of the “good” ideas that are on the radio industry’s drawing board.
What’s happening to radio’s good ideas?
You look around at the ideas that have been driving radio over the past 5 or so years; you have PPM, HD radio, Satellite radio, internet radio and there’s more. Which of these would you consider to be a good idea? Which are not so good? What new ideas will radio anoint as the next best idea? Is there anyone now that you’d look to and say that person has it? They either have the next good idea or will know it when they see it.
Pay attention for the good ideas
Keep your eyes and ears open to the next idea. It doesn’t have to be “the” idea; the one that leads to the rebirth of the radio industry, which by the way I believe will happen. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. There are a lot of good ideas that pass over your desk each and every day…pay attention. What about the company that offered 2 for 1 specials and it quickly became the next best way to drive radio revenue from sea to shining sea. Look at Tune Genie, Jeff Spector’s company, a good idea that quickly became a great idea. Hip Cricket, another great company built on the International success of mobile marketing. All of these represent good ideas that were brought to radio and someone had their eyes and ears wide open and weren’t afraid to say let’s give it a try. There will be a rebirth for radio and it will occur because of great ideas and because of people who paid attention and weren’t afraid to take a chance.
